It was great to meet again at the Riley Park Community Garden. Our guest speaker was the wonderful Prof. Art Bomke. After tasting crispy over wintering carrots we worked on three hands-on exercises:
1. Planting early season vegetables and flowers in the SPEC bed, while learning about soil temperature, seed spacing and labeling.
2. Starting herb and tomato seeds in the greenhouse, while learning about passive solar heating and planting charts. The plants will be later transplanted to Tupper school grounds and will hopefully be used for cooking at the school.
3. Adding compost to the garlic bed, while learning about cover crops and the nitrogen cycle.
